The Great Lakes Metro Chamber Coalition includes several Michigan chambers among dozens of business organizations in the Great Lakes region. The Chambers are working with federal lawmakers in Washington to promote long-term investment and new policy initiatives in five strategic areas:
- Federal transportation infrastructure funding/policy
- A 21st century border with Canada
- Energy Development
- Immigration of high-skilled talent
- Great Lakes water quality
Currently the Coalition is working with several lawmakers including Michigan Sen. Carl Levin and Rep. Bill Huizenga requesting that at least $30 million of the additional funding allocated to the Corps for Civil Works Operations and Maintenance be allocated to the Great Lakes Navigation System. That funding is critical to keeping Great Lakes ports and marinas operational with needed maintenance and dredging.
Wood said other issues discussed with federal lawmakers and their staffs included immigration reform, the federal Farm Bill, the Water Resources and Reform and Development Act and federal transportation funding.
