We invite you to join us on Tuesday, October 23rd for a Good Morning Traverse City Breakfast focused on Education in our region. The event will feature a panel of local educational leadership from Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District (TBAISD), Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS), and Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools (GTACS). We will discuss the roles and activities of these high quality educational institutions in our region, and open the floor up for questions from community members.

Dr. Nicholas Ceglarek – TBAISD
Dr. Nicholas Ceglarek studied mathematics, statistics and psychology at Grand Valley State University, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education in 1996.
Upon graduation, Dr. Ceglarek began his teaching career in Michigan at Rockford Public Schools. While teaching, he graduated from Grand Valley State University with a master’s degree in Educational Leadership. After three years of teaching mathematics including AP calculus, Dr. Ceglarek was awarded the assistant principal position of Rockford Middle School and appointed director of district assessment and student testing. In 2002, serving seven years in Rockford Public Schools, he became superintendent of Baldwin Community Schools at the age of 29, making him the youngest superintendent in the state of Michigan. In 2003 he was awarded the Grand Valley State University Outstanding Administrator award. After serving the students and families in Baldwin, Dr. Ceglarek was appointed superintendent of Fruitport Community Schools where he spent the next five years. While serving the Fruitport community, Dr. Ceglarek was presented with Grand Valley State University College of Arts and Science Distinguished Alumni Award and the Greater Muskegon Jaycees Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Ceglarek was then appointed superintendent of Hudsonville Public Schools where he has been serving since 2009. While serving the Hudsonville community, Dr. Ceglarek was inducted into the Allendale Public School inaugural class of the Hall of Fame. In addition, Dr. Ceglarek serves as president of Hand 2 Hand, a 501c non-profit with a mission to feed hungry children and is the chair of the Board of Managers of HPS©, a not for profit group purchasing organization.
In 2014, Dr. Ceglarek received his Doctor of Education degree from Eastern Michigan University, completing his dissertation on “An Investigation of the Relationship Between Michigan Department of Education School Achievement Ranking and the School’s Percentage of Economically Disadvantaged Students”. In 2018, Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District (TBAISD) Board of Education selected Dr. Ceglarek as superintendent. TBAISD is a service agency supporting over 24,000 students with 16 local school district in a five county region.
Dr. Nicholas Ceglarek resides in the Traverse City, Michigan with his wife Darcy and two sons, Colson and Zane.
Wayne Muller – GTACS
Wayne Mueller has served as the Director of Advancement for the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools (GTACS) since 2004. He also functions as the Executive Director for the GTACS Foundation, Inc. Wayne left a 12-year career in banking to work at GTACS because of his passion for Catholic education. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Finance Specialty) from Bowling Green State University. Wayne’s role at GTACS includes strategic planning, enrollment management, fundraising, financial review, and frequent prayer. Wayne and his wife of 23 years are proud parents of four children ranging in age from 10 to 17 years old.
GTACS is a parochial school system serving over 1,000 students in the Grand Traverse region. It is a ministry of five local parishes – Christ the King, Immaculate Conception, St. Francis, St. Joseph and St. Patrick and the Diocese of Gaylord.
Paul A. Soma, CPA – TCAPS
Mr. Soma currently serves as Superintendent for Traverse City Area Public Schools. He is a
registered CPA and holds a Master of Education degree. As Superintendent of TCAPS, he:
• Pioneered the implementation of the MI Excel Blueprint. A system approach to the delivery of
instruction. As a result, student achievement has increased across all subjects and age groups
• Helped pioneer the application of Lean principles to school district management and
co-authored the book Transforming The Way We Do Business, a book about incorporating Lean
principles in K-12 organizations.
• Implemented the GFOA Strategic Financial Planning Process to align district resources with
instructional priorities while balancing the budget.
• Led the district in passing, by 2 to 1 margins, a non-homestead millage in 2014 and a capital
millage in 2018.
• Is recognized as a leader in the state working for equity in school funding.
Prior to being named Superintendent he held the positions of Associate Superintendent of Finance
and Operations where he:
• Worked with his staff to prepare a Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, achieving the
Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting award 13 years in a row.
• Developed a comprehensive capital project planning process to prioritize bond projects and
maximize bond proceeds.
• Was a leader in the state in implementing a purchasing card system that now accounts for close
to $5.2 million dollars annually, netting the district over $72,000 annually in cost reductions and
• Modernized transportation operations, resulting in over $2 million (33% reduction) in savings
while at the same time improving service to the students.
• Has presented at state and national conferences on a variety of topics related to the
management of public school systems.
Before coming to Traverse City, Paul held the following positions:
• Executive Director of Business Affairs at Romeo Community Schools
• Finance Manager at Walled Lake Consolidated School District
• Senior Accountant at Deloitte & Touche
Paul and his wife, Kitty, have three children; two in college and one attending TCAPS. Paul is
passionate about TCAPS and enjoys attending any and all events that showcase the talents of TCAPS
students. In his leisure time he enjoys bass fishing.
