Chamber Welcomes Gov. Gretchen Whitmer
Gov. Whitmer’s comments centered on improving Michigan infrastructure which she said is hindering growth across Michigan’s economy.
“We need to act now, before a catastrophe strikes or the situation truly becomes unrecoverable,” Gov. Whitmer said. “Let’s come together and pass a budget that actually fixes the damn roads.”
Gov. Whitmer also addressed Michigan’s decline in childhood literacy and the state’s “skills gap” in better preparing students to enter Michigan’s workforce. She also discussed her efforts to improve the state’s communication with the public on imminent health threats, and her support for the state’s Healthy Michigan program. More details on how her administration plans to take on those challenges will be disclosed when she presents her proposed budget to state lawmakers next month.
Chamber officials also discussed Gov. Whitmer’s visit in terms of other local policy issues including affordable housing and early childhood development, including reaction from Chamber Government Relations Director Kent Wood.
