Team Grand Traverse Trailing –
Still Time to Sign Up for the
“MI Big Green Gym Blues Community Challenge”
Since April 27, 2013, the Grand Traverse community has been competing with the Cities of Marquette and Kalamazoo in the “MI Big Green Gym Blues Community Challenge,” sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
A win for Team Grand Traverse will land the county a $10,000 grant to be used for a local project or program that keeps people active and healthy in Michigan’s Big Green Gyms – our parks. The County plans to use the funds as seed money for a campaign to redevelop Kid’s Kove playground at the Civic Center.
According to Grand Traverse County Parks and Recreation Director Jason Jones, “We can win this challenge, but the competition is serious. The lead volleys back and forth between Team Grand Traverse and Team Marquette, and Team Kalamazoo has had some great surges in activity, too.” With six weeks left to go, Jones says, “We need to focus on further expanding our team, building a healthier community and, getting people together to achieve a community-wide goal.”
To date, Team Grand Traverse holds second place, with 971.82 logged miles. Marquette leads, with 1,022.92 miles, and Kalamazoo has logged 244.05 miles. With a 56-member roster, Team Grand Traverse would like to add members, and welcomes any citizen from, visitor to, or cheerleader for our Grand Traverse region.
The sign-up process takes just a few moments; simply follow these steps:
1. Sign up at www.walkingworks.com
2. Enter “Michigan Blue Cross and Blue Shield” under “Plan”
3. Enter “2013 MI Big Green Gym – Blues Community Challenge” under “Group” (this “auto-fills” the “Program” field)
4. Select “Team Grand Traverse” under “Team”
5. Consistently (every few days) log your activity on the website throughout the eight-week challenge period, so that our team wins!
Once an account is created, every day or two, log miles or time spent being active at www.walkingworks.com. It takes only a minute or so to log miles/time, and the payoff is big — for individuals and for our community. The best part is that miles/minutes may be retroactively entered back to the challenge start date of April 27, 2013.
This competition ends Saturday, June 22, 2013, when Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan tallies the number of minutes/miles logged by each team, and declares a winner.
