All around us in Northern Michigan people are recovering from substance use, gambling, and other mental health disorders. They are contributing to our businesses, connecting with their families, and giving back to our community. Yet these successes often go unnoticed by the general public, taking a back-seat to sensational media depictions of the lurid, stereotypical ‘drunk’ and ‘junkie’.
Every September people across the continent celebrate Recovery Month, an initiative sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), to support people in recovery and to educate communities about pathways to treatment. This year’s Recovery Month theme, “Join the Voices of Recovery: Together on Pathways to Wellness,” emphasizes the many ways people can prevent behavioral health issues, seek treatment, and sustain recovery as part of a commitment to living a physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually healthy life. Recovery Month provides a vehicle to celebrate these accomplishments and help reduce the deeply entrenched stigma of behavioral health disorders.
In celebration of Recovery Month 2013, Addiction Treatment Services (ATS) in Traverse City is hosting a FREE screening of the nationally-distributed documentary film The Anonymous People on Tues., Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the City Opera House. Several clips in the film were shot in TC during last year’s ATS Recovery Month event, “Guts: An Evening with Kristen Johnston.” The Anonymous People showcases stories of people across America who’ve dropped their personal anonymity in order to help reduce the stigma associated with substance use and other mental health disorders. Join with us on September 17th to send the message that Northern Michigan embraces recovery and supports those working to provide much-needed recovery services. The public is welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, or to view a trailer of the film, visit: AddictionTreatmentServices.org.
