The Great Lakes Metro Chambers Coalition, which includes the Traverse City Area Chamber, is continuing to promote HR 2273 co-sponsored by Michigan Congresswoman Candice Miller. The bill includes a provision to treat the Great Lakes as a single, integrated and interconnected navigational system – vastly increasing the leverage of the Great Lakes region on navigational issues throughout the Great Lakes system.
It also stipulates that a minimum of 80 percent of the federal Harbor Maintenance Trust is to be appropriated – which would represent a 60 percent increase from current funding levels to an estimated $1.44 billion. Plus, 10 percent of that total would be directed to small recreation and commercial harbors in FY 2014 and 2015.
Chamber members are urged to contact their federal lawmakers to support HR 2273. You can also learn more about the proposal at http://transportation.house.gov/wrrda. The Chamber will continue to keep you updated on the status of the proposed legislation.
