Last week philanthropists Laura and John Arnold stepped in and put up $10 million of their own to keep those doors open at Head Start preschools serving some of America’s poorest children. To follow up on this story, read the press release issued by Head Start or watch the video clip from NBC News.
The Laura and John Arnold Foundation, based in Houston TX, is devoted to producing lasting changes to society that maximize opportunity and minimize injustice. Though early childhood is not an area of focus for the Foundation, the Arnolds recognize that interrupting children’s education and care affects not only a child’s learning but also their parents’ ability to keep a job or complete their own education. Regarding their support for Head Start, the couple were quoted in a statement, “We believe that it is especially unfair that young children from underprivileged communities and working families pay the price for the legislature’s collective failures.”
