On Saturday, May 18, the DTCA along with American Waste will be hosting approximately 50 Westwood’s Elementary School first and fifth grade students who will create dumpster art as part of the TCAPS/DTCA/American WasteDumpsters on Parade. At 9:00 a.m. American Waste trucks will deliver 8 sketched dumpsters ready for the students to add their touch of color. This community service project is a collaboration between TCAPS, Downtown Traverse City Association, American Waste and four renowned local artists’ (Glenn Wolff, Jean Larson, Chase Hunt, and Nancy Nash)
The local artists were on hand at Westwood’s Elementary School Tuesday, May 7, to work with students to create public art sketches that represent themes of Traverse City and Northern MI. Months of student research was culminated with an artist rendering of student ideas and input to create a large sketch on the dumpster “canvas”.
All supplies for this project have been donated by American Waste and several stores of Downtown Traverse City. Painting will take place in Parking Lot “G” on State Street, next to Mode’s and behind Lilies of the Alley, 112 E Front Street. After the event the dumpsters will remain at the location and replace the previous receptacles in order to bring life to dumpsters and the alleyway of downtown Traverse City.
