Ferris State University Alumni honors Great Lakes Stainless CEO with Distinguished Alumni Award.
BY Peter Berden CFO, Great Lakes Stainless— BIG RAPIDS – Terry Berden, CEO of Great Lakes Stainless in Traverse City, was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award. The honor was presented by Ferris President, Dr. David Eisler on Thursday May 9, 2013 at the Alumni Annual Awards Dinner in Big Rapids. The Ferris State University Alumni Association annually recognizes outstanding alumni of the University based upon personal growth, leadership and contributions to the community.
The Purpose of the award is to recognize alumni who have used their Ferris degree to better themselves, society or the University while being a role model to current students.
Berden stated he felt very humbled by the award and talked about how many of his instructors at Ferris were role models to him. The instructors took interest in him as a student and believed in him. He gives back to organizations actively serving on the board for Goodwill Industries, Freedom Builders and supports Women’s Resource Center, Prison Ministries and many other charitable organizations.
Berden started Grand Traverse Refrigeration in 1976 and sold it to a long time employee in 2012. He started Great Lakes Stainless, a manufacturer of stainless steel equipment in 1995 and recently expanded by adding a woodworking division in 2012 with 13 new employees.
Terry is also co-inventor/owner of Healthy Energy Resources that produces Aristotle-Air (patent pending) a heat exchange product that kills germs in classrooms and saves schools between 30% and 40% on their utility bills, manufactured by Healthy Energy Resources, also located in Traverse City.
