the 2017 Young professional annual conference IS made possible by

The Chamber’s Young Professionals program is among the most-active and dynamic in Michigan for engaging young people in their communities and professional sectors – and it’s about to take that involvement to a whole new level.
The Young Professionals, led by YP Chair Lauren Harris and its newly organized Executive Committee, is undertaking a major rebranding initiative that will include a new title for the organization, a new logo and upgraded program offerings to better reflect the group and its connection to the Traverse City Area Chamber. “I think it’s important for us to stay fresh and relevant and unique,” Harris said.

Many of the changes will be rolled out at this year’s YP Conference happening Friday, October 6 at Northwestern Michigan’s College’s Hagerty Center. The event includes a keynote address by former NASA astronaut Jerry Linenger, a special edition of Leadership at the Movies featuring presenter Jonathon Pool, and a StrengthsFinder talent assessment with leadership expert Barbara Jordan. There will also be a lunchtime Expo event for businesses looking to connect with the YPs.

Keynote speaker – Jerry Linenger, Former Astronaut

Jerry Michael Linenger, retired Captain in the United States Navy Medical Corps, and a former NASA astronaut who flew on the Space Shuttle and Space Station Mir.

leadership at the movies – Invictus

Jonathan Pool

Leadership Strategist / Creative Thinker / Guide to individuals and entities seeking clear vision and strategy

Leadership at the movies is a professional development series offered by the Chamber.  In this inspiring, informative presentation Jonathan will draw from the academy award winning 2009 movie Invictus – about Nelson Mandella, the first democratically elected leader to radially divided South Africa.  Our topic will be How Character Can Change a Culture, and in this session we will use clips from the movie to highlight and discuss the leadership practices seen in the film.  Watch the film beforehand and come prepared to engage in a lively discussion.
