Each year, Cherry Wings Realty chooses a local hero organization to donate the proceeds from its 5K Hero Run. All profit is donated to a fire, police, military or EMS agency in the Grand Traverse area that lacks funding for a project or piece of equipment. This year the Grand Traverse 9/11 Memorial Park was chosen.
The Grand Traverse 9/11 Memorial Park is located at 897 Parsons, behind Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department Administration. Phase I, which is complete, features a 3,900 pound piece of the World Trade Center’s North Tower, benches, flagpoles and a brick wall. Plans for Phase II, which is scheduled for completion during the summer of 2014, includes a brick walkway leading form the parking lot to the artifact, and engraved bricks naming the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. Tentative official dedication for the park is planned for September 11, 2014.
