The Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in June unanimously approved a recommendation from its Government Relations Committee to oppose the signing of petitions being circulated by the Committee to Ban Fracking in Michigan. Your Chamber urges you not to sign it. Why?
The Chamber views the petition as an extreme measure that would have a devastating impact on Michigan’s economy. Michigan residents will be asked to sign the petitions to “save our water” or to protect the environment. But these are misleading characterizations with potentially severe ramifications for energy exploration in Michigan.
The Chamber’s Government Relations is thoroughly studying the issue of safe energy exploration in Michigan and will have more information going forward. But at this point, the petition to completely ban hydraulic fracturing in Michigan is extreme and will have significant negative consequences for Michigan businesses and residents. We urge you not to sign these petitions which will be circulated in our community in the coming weeks and months.
