Dear Senator Schmidt,
We were delighted to see the introduction of your Convention and Visitor Bureau (CVB) package of bills, Senate Bills 703-707.
While we have been working with you on solutions to diversify our economy in rural northern Michigan, tourism remains a top economic driver, and CVBs lead the way in marketing our area to the rest of the world. We see the short-term effect of those efforts in the number of visitors and amount of local spending annually. We also benefit long-term when those same visitors like what they experience and decide to live here, move here for a job, or open a business here.
We believe this legislation clarifies in statute the goal of these marketing and advertising efforts, funded through the regional CVB assessments, is to advance the overall image of the state and region. The package also ensures that regional CVBs and the State of Michigan are coordinating to develop promotional and marketing efforts that are tailored to each region’s need, while being consistent with the statewide message.
We believe the package helps to solidify the importance of a strong working relationship between regional CVBs and the State of Michigan, while including important transparency measures that instill public and consumer confidence in these marketing efforts.
Thank you for your leadership on this package. We look forward to working with you to continue to grow our regional economy.
