The Traverse City Film festival is celebrating 9 years this year, and for 6 of those years, the festival bookstall in the City Opera House has been supplied by Brilliant Books, who are now also an official sponsor of the TCFF.
“From the store’s early days in Suttons Bay we’ve supplied the books for the Film Festival”, said store owner Peter Makin. “It’s a huge challenge and an absolute honor.”
The books are not simply books of the movie, neither do the TCFF give Brilliant Books a book list. The store gets the list of movies at the same time as the general public and has less than three weeks to source over $20,000 worth of books for the annual festival, including film school and general movie books
The trick, explained Makin, is to ensure the bookstall reflects the interests and tastes of the Festival goers, based on the themes of the movie showing that year.
The store also arranges impromptu book signings with TCFF filmmakers and guests. Most notable last year was the visit of Wim Wenders and Susan Sarandon.
“We often don’t know until the last minute that an author is showing up”, explained Makin. “So we need to be nimble and swift. Fortunately, the staff love the TCFF and are all willing to go the extra mile to ensure festival goers have a great experience.”
