Benjamin Twiggs celebrates five years under current ownership.
Traverse City, MI – Becoming owner of Benjamin Twiggs wasn’t in Julie Millen’s plans several years ago. However, when a friend invited Millen to work alongside her at her Traverse City store, Millen jumped at the chance.
“I was looking for something to be passionate about,” explains Millen. “I wanted a new challenge in life.”
That opportunity presented itself when her friend decided to put Benjamin Twiggs up for sale. After some careful consideration, Millen decided to take over the business. In so doing, she was buying more than a retail store. Millen was inheriting a local legacy.
Opened in 1966, Benjamin Twiggs is the original purveyor of cherry products. Generations of loyal food lovers and gifts givers have enjoyed and shared the store’s popular gourmet cherry foods including jams, jellies, preserves, dessert toppings, cherry snacks, and many more. Such quality and customer loyalty were part of what encouraged Millen to take over the business. But something was missing.
“To be honest, the Benjamin Twiggs brand had faded a bit over the years,” Millen says. “It needed to be “freshened up” to appeal to a new and broader audience.”
Millen started by expanding her product line, adding new items that customers could “taste test” at the store’s sampling station. Many items quickly became new customer favorites. She focused on local food and ingredients as well as cherry themed products. Millen also embraced the community, becoming an active member of the Chamber of Commerce and local business community. She also participated in local events and activities, especially those that were focused on giving back to the people who live and work in Traverse City.
Today, under Millen’s leadership, Benjamin Twiggs has re-emerged as a retail leader of local cherry gourmet foods. Sales have doubled and the business is in a new and larger location.
“It has been an incredibly exciting time for the company and for myself personally,” Millen states. “We’ve formed many strong relationships in the community as a result of our team’s hard work. I’m definitely looking forward to many more years of serving our customers and community”.
To celebrate Millen’s fifth anniversary of ownership, Benjamin Twiggs is offering its popular Cherry Salsa for just $5 from August 26th through Labor Day. Purchases can be made in store and online at benjamintwiggs.com
